The 6th AASP Southwest Regional Conference was held at the University of Denver on April 8-9th. This is a conference where many professionals, and students gather together and learn more about the field of Sport and Performance Psychology.
The conference was very fortunate to have two renowned sport psychologists as Keynote speakers; Charlie Brown and Dr. Renee Appaneal who talked about their fields of expertise and practical experiences.
Conferences like these are all about sharing knowledge and allowing everyone to create bigger ’toolboxes’ for themselves. In conjunction to the keynoters throughout the day, individuals gave presentations on a plethora of topics relating to sport and performance psychology.
Gabi Whitmer and I presented NeuroSlam’s approach and the benefits of neurocognitive and emotional testing when working with athletes and sport teams. We showed the audience an emotional literacy test where participants were able to shout out the emotions they perceived from the faces on the screen. It was interesting to see how individual responses deferred widely when seeing the same stimulus!
Gabi and I then talked about all that NeuroSlam has to offer and how it relates to sport psychology. Neurocognitive tests do not replace the mental piece that we provide as sport consultants; rather it parallels and supports what we do with teams and individuals! Being aware of the areas that one excels in and the areas that may need some improvement are great aspects to know.
NeuroSlam’s interactive tests not only allow athletes to work on the small details of cognitive functioning requisite for a particular sport, but are also transformational for life itself
The conference proved to be a great experience and it was exciting to see how many participants saw NeuroSlam as a great tool for sport consultants and coaches moving forward!
